Favorite Final Fantasy?

topic posted Fri, January 2, 2004 - 12:19 PM by  Crow
Me, I like Final Fantasy VII. I've played them all (except XI). I mostly like it because of the incredible story, plus Cloud Strife is probably one of the best heros they've had in a long while. Sephiroth is one of the most dastardly villains of the series as well (yes I said dastardly).

So what is your favorite Final Fantasy?

I go with FFVI. It's the one that broke me into the series. I like the fact that there was so much there to keep my interest: it was LONG, there was a massive amount of Espers (summons), and just the way that it played. I love the story and characters too.

Final Fantasy IV all the way! Great character development and plot twists that stretched across a full range of emotions. Also for us in the US it is the first we saw of many now classic Final Fantasy staples such as chocobos, summoners, dragoons, and more.

Yes, FFVII had the best storyline, but as for gameplay I liked FFX and FFVIII. Yes I said FF8, I love that game. I still play this game. I've beat it more times than I care to count, and I've beaten Ultimate weapon with every possible combination of characters and/ or tactics. I know that it technically isnt the "boss", but That was the hardest fight I can remember in any of the games. I really disliked the materia system from 7, I liked the Magic system from 8, and I loved the orb system from X and X2.

    I've played FF 5,7,8,9,X,X2, & XI.

Thank Gary, I agree FFVIII was my favorite, to many hours on that game!

Cool. I thought I was the only one. Most FF fans treat me like I'm a dork for preferring 8 over 7. Thanx DRU

Funny thing about fans of the games. If you like seven you are resented by the people who like six; if you like eight you are resented by the people who like seven; and so on...just like what you like. Each game is unique and fun. While my favorite is seven, eight had some great cinematics and lots of fun game play. Plus a great card game. Anyway, bottom line, like what you like and if someone else has a problem, let em.

Actually the height of my FF experience was 6 And 7. What I enjoyed about 8 was the atmosphere, realism, and of course- the card game , however I never got past the Edena skill level. Although I owned it I disliked 9 the most. It reminded me too much like Fraggle Rock . Ten was ok but I still haven't even played X2.

9 was a good game! It was beautiful especially if you played it on the PS2 vs. PS1. It was an obvious attempt to get back the FF7 fans by making the story more important than the action, but it only served to slow down the game. When a game takes 100+ hours to complete, it doesnt need slowing down.

If you liked FFX you'll love FFX2, its just more of all the things you liked in FFX. The characters look better, the options on the grid are more extensive, in general its a bigger, badder and bolder. You should try it.

Has any one really tried FFXI? I'm put off from it because of a past experience with never sleep (everquest). Generally I dont like massively multiplayer RPG's, there are too many people on them who dont have jobs, and they take them waaaaaaaay to seriously. I dont really want an RPG which I have to play online. What do you guys think?

I don't like multi player online games. I've had to deal with forgetting to eat for days, caffine overdoses, falling asleep on the keyboard (EverCrack)and good ol' body looters one time too many. Frankly, I don't think I'll even play it, no matter how good people say it is. I think that they tried to make Final Fantasy more mainstream than it is in hopes of dragging in some fresh meat from the hack and slash generation that like to just skip the story line and the general thinking involved in a real rpg.( My pet peev is when people who haven't played the game a gillian times skip or ignore the story in effort to fight more.)

I guess I'm one of those annoying old school chicks.

Go old school. Its hard to maintain the storytelling mastery of the previous Final Fantasy Games when place it a MMORPG setting. Part of what makes these games so great to experience is that it is less like playing a game and almost like reading a book or watching a movie, its all about the story, not on running around with other players. You'd never hear Vincent shout, "W00T! I leveled up!" or Locke say, "j00 l4m3r$ $u(|<" the story can't be maintained very well when other people are envolved. These games are to be experienced alone and then the experiences are to be shared with other players. Ask someone about Aeris(Aerith) sometime and see what reaction you get. Ask someone about Squall or Omega Weapon...each one of these games have struck a chord in each fan of the series that is detracted from with multiplayer antics.

Vincent shouting, "W00T! I leveled up!"

                    That is... just ew.

Several of my friends are game art, game design like people. They always nag me to get into the system with them but I do not really get along with alot of gamers. I'm a solitary gamer and often a lurker. Storylines are important and I fear that most kids today are looking for ways to avoid a good one.

one should never skip out on a good story line, flashy games with initially impressive graphics can be overplayed all too quickly if it doesnt have a baffo story line to go with it

I long for a game that has replayablity, a wonderful creative story, strangly good graphics and above all, doesn't cost money every month or buyable for exchange of soul.

Well, for sheer replay Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross aren't bad. Heck multiple endings and lots of different characters to try. Another good rpg that is slightly less replayable but pretty fun is the old Dreamcast now Gamecube, Skies of Arcadia.

my favorite ff game..it's a tie between 7 and 8. 7 because it was the very first ff game i played, and after that experience, i renamed all the main guy characters to 'cloud'. obsessive compulsion kicks in :P and 8 because i like squall leonhart =)

    Re: Favorite Final Fantasy?

I can't really choose a "favorite" FF...there is just too much to consider.

Overall, I love VI the "best" because it has a great storyline, characters, gameplay and GREAT music....I think Kefka is quite probably the most insane villain of the entire genre, and I like that...

VII is a close second...it has a great storyline, and lets face it Sephiroth and Cloud are badasses...again, great music....I just love something about the "genetic manipulation" storyline..."don't screw with science, or it will screw with you...."
    ----------------------------
This is the point where the characters, in my opinion start to get a bit too....whats the proper word? .....emasculated....
    ----------------------------
VIII was good...I didn't enjoy the magic system....the graphics were good, but I think overall, to me, it was kind of a let-down. I didn't really like the weapon system, having to go find the magazines to upgrade them and get a certain number of items to fuse...just give me a backpack full of swords, for Christ's sake..."this one work? nope. this one work? nope. this one work?! Yup!"

IX was great, I think its one of the more underrated FFs.....I mean, the storyline was kind of weak, and it was REALLY easy...but I think it had great music, and I loved the return to a more "stylized" Final Fantasy world...I get kind of tired with all the movement to making games more and more realistic...I mean, "wonderful, Yuna and Tidus look like they could be real people.." But come on....Vivi Rocked AND was utterly adorable..... And the skill system was pretty good, IMO.

X....great game, not gonna knock it...I like the battle system...the spheregrid was interesting...but I wasn't too much of a fan....its one thing when they allow you to allocate skillpoints into catagories...its another when you have to spend a whole lot of time figuring out what direction to go in a maze of a stat grid....the storyline was mediocre....the graphics were GREAT....but, didn't give me the warm fuzzy that VI, VII, and IX did.....the battle system was great though, I liked trading characters in and out, mid-battle....my biggest complaint....what happened to flying around the world? I mean, come on, flying around is one of the greatest things in the Final Fantasy Saga....flying over the expanses of the ocean, finding some little island that wasn't on the map...

    X-2....kind of a letdown...and a bit easy.....see above for some complaints....

I think that XII is going to be great though....

I have a spot in my heart for VIII it being one of the first games i ever played all the way through i still think its the best fantasy... but then again i'm just working my way through VII now..I and II on GBA is pretty good, but i think my favorite is probably gonna go to Crystal Chronicles, just because of the fun of finally being able to play a final fantasy game with a group of people instead of taking turns with the remote. X and X-2 were good but the dress system on x-2 was kinda ionno... just not my thing i guess.

my two cents on XI... i lost two friends to it... its so depressing when someone gets addicted to a game like that and pretty much stops living their lives.... jeesh for the 16 year old on ok forgivable... but for the 22 year old one... damn dude get a job... ok done venting

As for me, I would say FFVII for the storyline, As well as FFVIII. I just love the idea of a "GunBlade". Currently i have been playing FFXI. This game does take a lot of time to get through, And just when you think you are just about done, SE adds to the storyline. The storyline is well done. As for dealing with comments about leveling.. most of that stuff is found outside of the main story; "missions". But to each their own. One thing I do miss with the new FF games; is that you can no longer have a moggle in your party. It sure was fun having those in your party.

Mogs....heh..... Yeah... There are going to be some in XII...since its based on the Final Fantasy Tactics universe... I would really like to see a return to the VI "universe" or at least the style. I think they should create a FF with the battlesystem of X, a large number of specified characters like in VI, and an overall storyline feel of VII, with a graphics style like IX... Then again, XII may change the whole equation...but I'm getting really tired of these effeminate male leads... Cloud was great, Squall was ok, Zindane was kinda a huge wuss, and Tidus, he was somewhere in between Zindane and Squall...Is it just me or does Vaan look like he's going to be a wuss? Perhaps thats a topic for another thread....

But hey...XII is gonna have riflemen and Moogles...I think its going to be a great game.....but then again...as much as I may dislike parts of the games, they ARE all really Great games...

Cool, i've been looking forward to FFXII. I hope we can use moggles in a party as well as some cool jobs; like Blue mage, and Time Mage. Thats one thing I really like about FFX-2, the jobs you could have... I just love Dark Knight. It had one of coolest intro in the game. The way your Char looked as if it was coming from "hell" to fight.
One thing i did forget to post was about the "tanks". I think it was FFIII in which you could take tank during a battle and start to use it. One a side note: One FF game i am not looking forward to; is the shoot-up game with Vincent as the main char. Could be as bad as that choco race game they made. lol

I'm actually looking forward to FF:Dirge of Cerberus...I mean, sure, looks like its going to be a platformer...but they're keeping a lot of secrets with it, info that the game exists has been known for a while, but thats about all, along with a few screenshots....I only hope that they try to kinda go in the direction of the Legacy of Kain series with it, as far as gameplay goes...I mean, come on... Its Vincent Valentine...with his guns and his claw and his whole changing into a monster thing going on...it could be quite the "platformer." He was actually my favorite character from VII....VII had some really great characters.... In a rumble between VII's characters and X's characters....in my opinion VII would totally win..Hell...Cloud, Sephiroth and Vincent versus the entire cast of X....VII would win...

Storyline is what has carried the series so far. Fresh gameplay systems are what keep it going. VI and Tactics are my favs. VI for the character personality/job makeup and identity/racial issues. (& loads of fun) Tactics for political struggles and character personalization. Tactics Advance for correcting minor gameplay issues in Tactics and continuing the tradition of advanced character customization. The racial breakdown of characters into job class specialties was also very excellent. TA was a bit too far on the cutesy side for me.. but i can't talk cause XII is looking FUCKING EXCELLENT!!

TA also brought memories of the good old days in VI & VII where combining various abilities yielded TRULY INCREDIBLE RESULTS! ex. gem box+econimizer, genji glove+offering(esp. on setzer with the fixed dice.. 60,000-80,000 dmg!!), vanish+doom/xzone..

own all except chrystal whateveritscalled.. beaten all except jap3, crystal whateveritscalled and 5 cause i started playing vagrant story.. forgot where i was and what i was supposed to do.. i hate that..

X & X2 were probably the easiest..to beat.. getting all the final weapons in X
was something else..WHEW!!! VIII was easy as hell, but with the draw/GF system.. it might've been too difficult for some.. IX was VERY well made and though i despise cutesy shit.. it not only gets my vote but the CGs of summons still rival that of X.. VII is good.

by the way if you like FF1 then you NEED to play VI.. lots to do lots to do..

My favorite Final Fantasy game is FFII, always. It's the most beautiful game in the world. Love the characters, plot, music..

I saw Nobuo Uematsu a little while ago when he played the "Dear Friends" concert in San Francisco. I was in such awe to see him live, it was wonderful!!!!!!!!!

I suppose a lot of people agree with FFVII being the best, and it certainly is my favorite. Not entirely sure how I came across it, but it was my first in the series that I played. Never did beat it though. I desperately wanted Knights of the Round and...... rotten gold chocobo. (incidentally, my friend tells me now some US versions of the game couldn't make gold chocobos...hilarious....)

Addicted, off and on, to FFXI. It's a good time so long as you have people to play with. Same pros/cons as most MMO's I'm sure. It certainly does take a lot of time and effort to get anywhere however. If you've run out of other games to play this season, I'd check it out.
